Our dear Ma, Chitra (Nupur) Ray passed away at 2.35 AM on February 19th, 2017 at the age of 74. She left this world peacefully holding the hands of both her sons Navaneel and Nilanjan at Mount Sinai hospital in New York, NY.
Chitra was preceded by her loving husband of almost 25 years Colonel (Dr.) Rajat Chandra Ray. Ma was best friend, dearest philosopher and unerring guide for her two sons Navaneel (Raja) and Nilanjan (Bubu). She was very fond of her daughters-in-law Arpita and Jayeeta. She was the sternest as well as most loving grandmother to 5 granddaughters Naina, Niharika, Nidhi, Nayonika and Nalini. Chitra was very attached to all her siblings, Bablu (Dada), Jhumur, Babuji, Khokon, Toton and Khuku. She will be dearly missed by her extended family and many close friends.
Chitra had numerous talents. She was an excellent cook and always loved to host friends and family. As an Army wife, she traveled across India and made many friends everywhere. She was trained in Indian classical music, performed for Doordarshan and taught many students. She loved the theater and acted and directed many plays in cities all over India. She loved gardening and was known to gift visitors with home grown vegetables.
Most importantly, Chitra was a wonderful human being, always generous, compassionate and concerned about the welfare of her extended family and friends. Chitra had a keen interest in helping everyone she knew. She could be blunt at times but always had everyone's best interests at heart. Her favorites were Pakeezah (film), Sanjeev Kumar (actor), Meena Kumari (actress), Manna Dey/Bhimsen Joshi (singers). At all times, she was guided by the teachings of the Gita, Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Ma and Swami Vivekananda. We will forever and fondly remember her warm smile, compassion and great love that embraced every one of her family, friends and acquaintances.
