Norbert W. Sander, Jr., M.D. died on March 17, 2017, St. Patrick's Day. Beloved husband of Bridget, cherished son of Gertrude and brother of Carroll Sivco (Peter); loving father of Eva Fitzgerald, Jessica Sander (Christopher), Emma and Phoebe. Pre-deceased by father Norbert W. Sander and brother John Gerard; devoted grandfather to Catherine and Kiera Fitzgerald.
A proud son of Yonkers and alumnus of Fordham Prep, Fordham College, the University of Lausanne and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Norb was a champion in every sense. For over 40 years he served his patients on City Island and Manhattan as the very model of compassionate healer and faithful advocate. An elite runner, Norb won the New York City Marathon in 1974, still the only New Yorker to do so.
In the early 90's, recognizing how his own life had been shaped by the caring institutions of his youth, Norb led the reclamation of the Fort Washington Armory and its transformation into a world-class track and field facility serving the needs of New York City's youth and the community of Washington Heights. Thousands have come to cheer that miraculous achievement and thereby to salute his relentless generosity. At his death, he was the President and CEO of the Armory Foundation.
Friends may call at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, 64 Ashford Avenue, Dobbs Ferry, NY, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, March 20th. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, March 21st at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Pl, Yonkers, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Armory Foundation.
